Hollow Night

Until November 5 the rain smells of candle wax. Every map is dressed up, four strange guests have moved into the Portal Room, and the Jack-o'-Lanterns are out. Collect Hollow Candy and trade it for costumes.

New elite

The Hollow Jack-o'-Lantern

While you fight through the realms, a grinning pumpkin in a witch's hat may come drifting in with a sack of candy. Expect one about every 20 minutes. A banner tells you when it arrives, and if nobody beats it within 5 minutes it floats away.

3×tougher than the monsters around it 3×the EXP 10Hollow Candy every time, for every player who shares the kill
Reaper's Wings

Reaper's Wings · a 1 in 100 drop. You can't buy these: the only way to get them is to beat a Hollow Jack-o'-Lantern.

It only appears in the realms' rooms, never in the Den, hideouts, boss arenas or Echoes.

Hollow Candy

Every monster you defeat has a 3% chance to drop one, in the story and in Echoes. Everyone who shares the kill gets their own chance.

Spend it at Trick and Treat's candy shop in the Den.

New quests

Four guests in the Portal Room

Hollow Night has brought some odd visitors, and each has a three-part quest line for you. Every part pays Hollow Candy and EXP, 240 candy across all four lines. Finish a guest's whole line and they give you their own cosmetic, one per character, delivered to your Cash tab. The guests leave when Hollow Night ends.

HazelA little witch set on carving the scariest lantern.
RewardHazel's Lantern
Madame BelladonnaBrewing the Hollow Night draught on her broom.
RewardBelladonna's Rose Hat
MildredThe ghost maid hosting the party.
RewardMildred's Lace Cap

While a gathering part is open, monsters drop what the guest needs: Pumpkin Pulp, Candle Stubs, Bat Wings and Cobweb Lace. The Hollow Jack-o'-Lantern always carries the Lantern Glow Belladonna asks for. Other parts send you hunting, or across the room on errands between the guests.

New in the Den

Trick and Treat's candy shop

Two moon bunnies in witch hats have set up shop in the Den. Trade your Hollow Candy for any of 12 Halloween costumes, and try each one on in their mirror first. Their shop also takes you straight to the Hollow Night shelf in the Cash Shop.

Pitter and Patter's Hollow Night gifts

Day 7

On day 7 they hand you Pyuri, a stitched bunny pet. You get Pyuri once per account; after that, day 7 gives extra candy instead.

The twins' usual daily gifts come back after the event, right where you left off.

The Hollow Night shelf

A new Cash Shop shelf in two weekly drops, each with three pets.

Week 1 until Oct 29 · pumpkins and witches

Pumpkin Jack, Pumpkin O and Pumpkin Lantern

Week 2 until Nov 5 · ghosts and the dead

Papa, Nono and Bobo Ghostie

Pet bundles: each week's three pets come as one bundle for 960, 20% off. A pet you already have comes as a Pet Coupon instead. Pick the bundle and the shop's mirror shows your three pets with the haunted house rising behind you.

A haunted house

Bring out three Hollow Night pets (any of the six shop pets or Pyuri) and stand still for 5 seconds: a haunted house rises behind you, and it fades when you move. It stays after Hollow Night ends, because the pets are yours for good.

Other players see it too, unless they've hidden other players' pets in Options.

Jack-o'-lantern pops

While Hollow Night runs, monsters burst into a grinning pumpkin when they fall, and again when they come back.

Every map, dressed for Hollow Night

While the event runs, every map gets MapleStory's Halloween dressing: strings of jack-o'-lanterns on pumpkin-headed poles, lantern trees, candy stalls, pumpkin piles, spider webs and jack-o'-lantern chandeliers. It all packs itself away when Hollow Night ends.

Good to know

From now on, new cosmetics belong to the character who gets them. Everything you already own stays shared across your account, and pets are still shared too. Pet Coupons don't work on the Halloween pets. You can now wear cosmetic gloves.

New story

Two new realms

The story continues into the sixth and seventh realms, the last two colours of the rainbow. Tux opens each one once you've restored the realm before it.

Realm 6 · Lv 91–105 The Long Lamps

Indigo. Walk Memory Lane, the Hall, the Road of Regrets and the Road to Oblivion.

  • The Chief Memory Guardian guards the Hall. The Margin hides behind the statues Thought and Memory: break both together, or one calls the other back.
  • The Record, Indigo's reward, is an account-wide card for every Lv30+ character you own. Each class's card adds Max HP (Warrior), Max MP (Magician), Accuracy (Bowman) or Avoid (Thief), and it grows as that character levels. Open it with ].
  • Indigo story gear at Lv93, 97 and 103.

Realm 7 · Lv 106–120 The Painted Town

Violet. Main Street, the clockmaker's shop, the nightly Ceremony, and Patience.

  • The Sweeper walks on after the Ceremony in the Bright Ballroom. The Author is the story's finale.
  • Your starter umbrella is now A Borrowed Umbrella. It stays locked in your bag until the Painted Town asks for it back.
  • Violet story gear at Lv108, 112 and 118.

The level cap is 105 after Blue's boss and 120 after the Margin. Tux now opens the next realm up to 5 levels before the old cap, so beating a boss early never leaves you stuck.

Balance and new skills

Class changes

Pick your class to see what changed. "All classes" covers everyone.

All classes

Skill pace, movement and Combat Power.

1st- and 2nd-job skills are free

New

They're learned as you level. Pigment for skills starts at the 3rd job.

2

The 2nd job arrives with Tux's Lv20 reward

Changed

Its area skill is learned for free: Ground Smash, Gale Star, Chain Lightning or Arrow Bomb. The rest unlock from Lv26.

3rd- and 4th-job skills arrive as you level

Changed

You unlock a new 3rd-job skill at Lv60, 63, 66, 69 and 72, and a new 4th-job skill at Lv90, 95, 100 and so on. How high you can raise a skill grows with you too: up to Lv10 by Lv75 (4th job: by Lv105).

↕

Ropes and ladders climb 2× faster

Buff

Speed buffs can push that to 2.4×.

→

No knockback mid-move

Buff

Ordinary monster hits during a movement skill still deal damage but no longer shove or stagger you. Boss hits still knock you back.

CP

Combat Power now includes your skills

Changed

So expect your number to change. Avoid no longer counts toward it.

Endgame

Echoes, rebuilt, and Echo Duels

Echoes now open at Lv 120, once you've finished the whole story. Until then the Echo list shows as a preview.

One endless ladder

1

Echo 1, 2, 3 and on, with no top. Each number uses one realm's floors (Red, Green, Yellow or Orange). It's the same for everyone and changes every Tuesday (UTC). Clearing in half par opens the next two numbers.

≈

The rain rises. Past par the water climbs on your run line, and at twice par the Echo floods and the run ends. Par is now set by the Echo number, and it's much shorter early on.

☂

Echo Umbrella (20,000 Meso at Winchester once you have access). When you'd die in a run you're asked "Open your umbrella?" for 8 s, with No as the default. Yes stands you up at 50% HP. You can use one per run. A Dry clear without one pays +25% Echo Dust and ranks higher.

★

Rewards. Your best clear each week leaves a cache of Echo Dust, shards and a gear piece. Your first clear each day pays +50% Dust. Bring friends: each extra party member adds +10% Dust and a chance at a second gear piece.

◆

Gear and amulet. Echo gear drops for Lv120, gets stronger with the Echo number and its grade, and is named for where it dropped ("Red Echo 8"). The amulet attunes itself when you have the shards. Each story boss pays one tier of shards once, and tiers now go past 20.

Also new: leaderboards at the level cap with a class filter (a new season starts now), a keep-going card (Next / Again / Portal Room), entering from anywhere safe, a Forfeit button, and an upgrade verdict on the result card. Affixes are renamed Thunderhead, Oilskin, Cloudburst, Squall, Overcast and Gust.

New PvP

Echo Duels

Race another player up a rising Echo, each in your own copy of the same floors. The water climbs behind you both, and if you flood or die you're out. The last one standing wins. You lose nothing but the duel.

Queue for a match (it follows you while you play) or challenge a friend, a party member or anyone nearby. Open the Duel tab with '. Players are matched by amulet tier, and Tinctures and umbrellas aren't allowed. All duels open at Lv120; ranked also needs the amulet.

30Pigment + a Forge Guard for a ranked win
15Pigment for a casual win
5Pigment for a finished loss

Your first 5 paid duels each day pay. A rematch with the same player pays once a day. Quitting or disconnecting pays nothing.

Climb the Watch

The first time each season you reach a rank, you get a Forge bundle (Guards + Slot Restores):

Envoy2 + 0
Warden3 + 1
Keeper5 + 2
Steward8 + 3

Realm sets and more

Every realm leaves something on you. Gear from a realm belongs to that realm's set: wear 3 pieces to wake its vice, and 5 to settle it into its virtue. Mix sets however you like, such as 3 of one and 3 of another. Until you're wearing 3 of a realm's set, every drop from that realm belongs to it; after that, only some do. Auto-equip still picks the stronger piece first.

Realm3 pieces · the vice5 pieces · the virtue
RedFury: up to +15% damage as your HP fallsPassion: the full +15% at any HP
GreenEnvy: +12% damage to elites and bossesCompassion: kills heal you 6% (nearby party 3%), at most 8% a second
YellowFear: below half HP, 25% less damage taken and +15% speed for 4 s, once every 20 sJoy: +15% damage above 70% HP
OrangeVanity: +2% damage per Unique-or-better piece worn (max +10%)Enthusiasm: +4% per piece (max +16%)
BlueSorrow: 12% less damage takenSerenity: 10% less damage taken for 3 s after a potion
IndigoObsession: +3% damage per hit in a row on one target (max +12%)Wisdom: max +15%, and the streak carries to the next target
VioletDelusion: +20% critical damageCreativity: 20% of hits repeat as a phantom hit for half damage
S

Settling

Love a piece but want a different set on it? Settle it at the Forge with 10 of a realm's monster items, 1 of its shards and some Pigment. Or use a single Tear (Tear of Fury, Tear of Envy and so on): monsters drop their realm's Tear about 1 in 400, and bosses 1 in 20. Your monster items finally have a use, and auto-equip never swaps out a Settled piece.

↺

Old realms grow with you

Go back to a realm you've already restored and its monsters rise to meet you, just 5 levels below you. They give EXP, Meso and gear worth your time, and their name tags show the level they're fighting at. That also means a high-level friend can play alongside a new player without taking every kill.

Loot

  • Every room chest now drops a piece of gear, and chest loot always reaches your bag.
  • Yellow drops about 3.5× more gear, and Orange drops more Pigment.
  • Story bosses pay 45 Pigment in their daily chest.
  • Rain-forged drops: gear can drop with +1 to +3 Forge points that use no slot.
  • Forge Guards and Restores now drop: rarely from monsters from Green on, more often from elites, from Echo clears, and from each story boss's chest once a day per character.
  • Ground drops vanish after 3 minutes (keys, Rain-forged and Unique+ gear after 10), at most 120 per map.
  • Winchester no longer sells the Wash of Clear Rain. Ones you own still work, and Reset AP is in the Stats window.

The Forge, redesigned

Each slot now does one job:

WeaponAttack
GlovesAttack
OverallMain stat
HatBoss & elite damage
EarringDamage vs 3+ foes
PantsLess damage taken
CapePotion healing
ShoesMove speed
  • Hard strikes: a 30% chance for +4 points (was 10% for +3).
  • Story gear has fewer slots (3 on weapons and overalls, 2 on other pieces) and stops at 8 forged points. Echo gear keeps its slots and stops at 16.
  • Dismantling a forged piece returns half the Pigment spent forging it.
  • A Forge Slot Restore only reheats a socket that a missed strike spent.

Hallmark (Echo gear only): at 8+ forged points, wake one bonus line, reroll it with Echo Dust, and temper it up the tiers.

The world

♛

Tougher bosses after Yellow

The White Monkey Chief, Ravana and the Holdfast have about twice the HP. They were falling in about 25 seconds; now they put up a real fight.

!

Late realms are dangerous again

Your armour now holds up less well against higher-level monsters, so from Blue onward they hit harder. Echo floors are unchanged.

⧗

Fuller rooms

More monsters everywhere, spread evenly across each room's platforms, and every room takes a few satisfying minutes to restore.

»

A faster start

The training ground's storm takes 50 kills, you reach Lv20 on the kill that clears it, and Tux sends you straight to Red. New characters start with stat and skill auto-assign on; untick it any time.

Orange

  • About a third more monsters.
  • Updrafts in every room, so you can reach every platform. The temple's stray platforms are gone.
  • Rooms glow amber from the start behind a grey haze that lifts as you fight, and the rain stops once a room is restored.

Blue

  • Every Blue room is relit as an aqua night, glowing from its own diver lamps.
  • You can grab its ropes and ladders straight from the floor.
  • In Blue, Indigo and Violet the lights are in colour from your first kill, and every monster's glow now matches its colour.
↑

Zakum's Last Stand

The story fight now shows a live arrow to the safe side of the wall.

Quality of life

Interface

Windows and controls

  • Skill icons pop when they come off cooldown, shake red when a cast is refused, and glow briefly when cast.
  • The Forge window is redesigned. The Hallmark column only shows on Echo gear.
  • "Sell downgrades", "Sell Etc items" and "Dismantle downgrades" each open one list with a tick per item.
  • Throw Away asks first and lets you choose how many. Toasts last longer (3.5 s).
  • The Stats window gets FORGE and LINKS tabs.
  • Set pieces show a thin line in their realm's colour in the bag and equipment.
  • Loot on the ground glows by grade, and a keycap over the nearest drop shows how to pick it up.
  • You can see other players' skill effects and pets (Options > Other players: Full / Light / Off), and you can take up to 3 pets out.

  • Character Select's cave shows again after you return from the game.
  • The Husky pet no longer looks like it's crying.

  • Orange Echo ropes work. Echo floors have no padlocks, and Green's have fewer elites.
  • Korean and Chinese: tutorial arrows find translated keys, and phone players are told to tap instead of press.

Known issues

  • Channels are new. Tell us if switching misbehaves.
  • If you switch the language from Korean to Chinese in game, the title art stays Korean until you restart.
